History

A DO letter vide U-12012/68/2012-ME-PII dated 9th May 2013 was received from Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare regarding newly launched Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Establishment of New Medical Colleges attached with existing District/Referral Hospitals” to provide central funding support for opening new medical colleges by strengthening / upgrading the district hospitals.

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration, being an Union Territory without legislature decided to avail benefit of this Centrally sponsored scheme for “Establishment of new medical college attached with existing district/referral hospital” by upgrading the GB Pant District Hospital, Port Blair to medical college. DO letter No.1-2/MC/DHS/13-14 dated 20.09.2013 along with Detailed project report was sent to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare by Andaman and Nicobar Administration proposed to establish a 100 seats Medical College and the DPR was examined by the Technical evaluation committee in its meeting held on 13.11.2014. Thereafter, recommendations of Technical evaluation committee were also considered and approved by Empowered Committee in its meeting held on 29.12.2014. Accordingly, Ministry approved the proposal for setting up of a new medical college at Port Blair by up gradation of GB Pant Hospital at a total cost of ₹189 Crores.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS, Sri Vijaya Puram is a NMC recognized medical college which was established by upgrading the existing GB Pant Hospital under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for establishment of new medical college by upgrading district/ referral hospital. ANIIMS is established by Andaman & Nicobar Medical Education and Research Society (ANIMERS) under Andaman & Nicobar Administration. The President of the General Body of ANIMERS is Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands with Chief Secretary as Vice President. The day-to-day functioning of ANIIMS is under control of Executive Council, where Chief Secretary is the Chairman and Principal Secretary (Health) Vice Chairman of the Executive Council.

ANIIMS

Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Sri Vijaya Puram came into being on 1st Sep, 2015 (Academic Session 2015-16). Opening up of a Medical College in Sri Vijaya Puram was a long cherished dream of the Islanders for almost 04 decades. 107 acres of land was allocated by A&N Administration for the establishment of the Medical College in mid-80’s.

DPR was prepared and submitted to MoH & FW with the MCI application and letter of Consent for affiliation from the Pondicherry University to permit the opening of a Medical College with 100 students to MBBS course at Sri Vijaya Puram by upgrading GBPH (an erstwhile district hospital of South Andaman). All preparation were made (acquisition of land, infrastructure, equipment's/instruments), recruitment of faculty both teaching and non-teaching was completed.

MCI team inspected the proposed college on 21st and 22nd Jan 2015. Observations were made which were successfully implemented. Following this MCI team carried out 1st compliance inspection for LOP on 24th April 2015. Deficiencies pointed by the team were again complied with. Secretary-Health also submitted an affidavit to comply with all the shortcomings within a stipulated time frame.
