Overview
In 2015, the Department of Psychiatry (Room No 45, 45A, 46), located in GB Pant Hospital building of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), which is an undergraduate medical college-cum-hospital institution, started its services. The Department is NMC recognized and runs in accordance with the NMC regulations since its inception. It provides comprehensive psychosocial services to the people of A & N Islands.
Undergraduate psychiatry academic and clinical teaching is successfully delivered by qualified, NMC recognized teaching faculty. The Department actively supports and coordinates the National Mental Health Program, District Mental Health Program and Telemanas. It also runs the undergraduate student counselling centre to support students with psychological distress.
From time to time, the department undertakes and provides regular community outreach services with the Health and Wellness centres attached to ANIIMS and camps for the particularly vulnerable tribal group people of the islands.

Dr. Anand Lingeswaran has been appointed as the Senior Psychiatric Consultant for the TELEMANAS, telephone mental health helpline, Government of India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands branch.
