The Pathology Department vision reflects the commitment to excellence in training and teaching Pathology to undergraduate MBBS students, conducting clinical and basic research tailored to local needs, and providing timely, free-of-cost, and high-quality diagnostic and Blood Centre services to the population of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In the Department of Pathology, the latest technology converges with subject expertise to deliver accurate diagnostic services. As a backbone of healthcare, the department serves as a beacon of diagnostic precision and excellence, contributing profoundly to patient care, research, and education.

Pathology Hospital Laboratories

The Pathology Hospital Laboratories provide quality laboratory services. As per NMC norms, three Pathology laboratories are functional in the hospital:

  • Histopathology Laboratory
  • Hematology & Clinical Pathology Laboratory
  • Cytopathology Laboratory

Blood Bank

  • Provides quality transfusion services
  • Accredited Blood Centre under Government regulation of FDA
  • Facilities for blood component separation and storage

Activities

With academic programs, training, and workshops, the Pathology Department aims to nurture the next generation of pathologists and laboratory medicine professionals, ensuring a service legacy of excellence to the common population and fostering research innovation. The comprehensive pathology education teachings in the undergraduate MBBS program are meticulously planned, executed, and constantly updated to meet student requirements. The Student-Centric Teaching & Learning methods are designed to equip MBBS trainees with the essential knowledge and skill sets required in the era of evidence-based medical practice.

Faculty members are well-trained in medical education and consistently update themselves with the latest teaching methodologies. They employ interactive teaching techniques such as case-based learning, group discussions, and tutorials. Additionally, faculty members actively engage in educational research projects and encourage students to undertake ICMR STS research projects. Regular student feedback further enables the department to continuously improve the quality of its teaching methods.

The Pathology Department offers comprehensive diagnostic services across various specialty laboratories, including histopathology, hematology, cytology, and clinical pathology, all free of cost. Each test result generated in these labs is delivered with utmost accuracy and in a timely manner.

The Blood Centre functions round the clock, engaging in activities such as blood collection from in-house donors, organizing outdoor blood donation camps, separation of blood components, TTI testing, and issuing blood products for hospital and inter-island patient requests. These services are provided with strict quality assurance in accordance with FDA,DGHS,CDSCO and international guidelines with a dedicated team of doctors, technical staff, and nursing personnel. The Blood Centre is also actively involved in educational activities.

The Laboratories and Blood Centre have established in-house policies and standard operating procedures to ensure efficient and high-quality functioning, contributing significantly to healthcare delivery and medical education in the region.

Achievements

  • ‘The Blood Bank, ANIIMS & GB Pant Hospital, Sri Vijaya Puram’ received a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Blood Transfusion Council, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, during the event National Conclave on Blood Transfusion Services, conducted at Kochi, Kerala on 5-6 Feb 2025. The certificate was issued for invaluable services and contribution towards Blood Transfusion Services, demonstrating teamwork, dedication, hard work, and commitment to quality services. ANIIMS & GB Pant Hospital is the only blood bank catering to all 38 islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for blood components - PRBC (Packed Red Blood Cells), FFP, and Platelets.

  • The high-end gold standard technology – HPLC, for pathology diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, and HB variants (Hb E, Hb D, Hb C), is functional at the Hematology Laboratory, Pathology Department, ANIIMS & GB Pant Hospital. The installed HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) machine (Company: Lifotronics H9, Matrix Labs) has been operational since 26th March 2025.
