Overview
The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology is to impart quality patient care, holistic medical education and ethical research. The vision is to inculcate clinical skills, professionalism and leadership skills among students in Ophthalmology, to strive for excellence in quality patient care and treatment with the aim of reducing preventable and avoidable blindness, to actively participate in the implementation of national programmes for eradication of blindness, and to promote clinical research among students and faculty in the department.

Ophthalmology Department Services
The department deals with patients with all types of eye ailments, providing routine outpatient and inpatient services such as refraction, computerized eye testing, spectacle prescription, major and minor OT ocular procedures, and ocular emergencies. In addition to routine investigations, several specialized investigations and procedures are also performed.

Surgical Procedures
The department possesses a fully functional operational theatre exclusively for Ophthalmology that functions 6 days a week. The following surgeries are carried out:
- Cataract surgery, including phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation
- Uncomplicated Glaucoma surgeries
- Lacrimal sac surgeries for adults
- Involutional or senile Entropion/Ectropion correction
- Intravitreal injections

Achievements
With the supervision and support of the Director and Medical Superintendent of ANIIMS and under NPCB&VI, two surgical cataract camps were conducted in January – February 2024 and April 2024. A total of 405 cataract patients were operated on in the first camp, and 47 cataract patients from Nicobar were operated on successfully.
Dr. Anjalikoteshwar was awarded for the operative cataract camp for Nicobar patients.
