The Institute started its first academic session w.e.f. the academic year 2015-16 with an intake capacity of 100 seats vide Ministry of Health and Family Welfare letter no. U-12012/164/2015-ME (P-II), dated 08th June, 2015, of which, 85% seats are reserved for the students of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The present seat intake for MBBS is 114. The 545 bedded Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBPH) is attached to ANIIMS as the teaching hospital. GBPH also serves as the only referral hospital for the entire Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), New Delhi has accredited ANIIMS with 6 DNB seats in the subjects of Paediatrics, General Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynaecology for the year 2025. Furthermore, ANIIMS has been granted 13 MD/MS seats in the subjects of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery and Anaesthesiology for the academic year 2025-26
Further, ANIIMS also runs IGNOU courses in Certificate in Community Health with an intake of 30 students
