Overview
The Department of Biochemistry at ANIIMS, Sri Vijaya Puram primarily aims to become an epitome in education and service under the dimensions of enquiry, responsible training, and referral. The goal is to develop an undergraduate training program focused on identifying and solving problems through academic and experimental research.
Regular seminars and integration of clinical experiences into the early years of a medical student's curriculum help students understand the practical application of knowledge gained in the classroom. As part of central diagnostics in the hospital wing, clinical biochemistry supports clinical decision making through quality investigation reports.
The department also aims to establish a genetics laboratory to contribute to advancements in medical research, diagnostics, and personalized medicine. Additionally, population studies related to nutritional and metabolic derangements are planned to better understand their prevalence, risk factors, and impact on public health.

Academic Activities
The Department of Biochemistry, ANIIMS is committed to laying a strong foundation for future doctors. The department is well organized with experienced faculty trained to incorporate the latest advancements in medical education as per the CBME curriculum for quality undergraduate teaching.
In addition to didactic lectures, faculty employ innovative teaching methods such as Case Based Learning, Self-Directed Learning, AETCOM role play, seminars, quizzes, and early clinical exposure to reinforce biochemical concepts. Students are also trained in Attitude, Ethics, and Communication skills.
Students are continuously encouraged to take a keen interest in research activities and are motivated to participate in academic and cultural competitions at various levels.
Services
- The Clinical Biochemistry Lab at G.B. Pant Hospital offers approximately 40 routine and 20 special investigations, including hormone assays and tumour markers.
- Services are provided round the clock, with an average of 300–400 OPD and 150–250 IPD samples analyzed daily.
- A total of 4000–5000 investigations are performed daily, with 20–25% analyzed during night shifts.
- Routine and special investigations together account for nearly 8–10 lakh investigations annually.
- The lab also provides services to tribal populations (Jarawas, Onges, and Shompens) and performs hormone assays for inter-island samples.
- Daily Internal Quality Control (IQC) is performed, and the lab is linked with CMC Vellore for monthly EQAS.
- A Turn Around Time (TAT) of 8 hours for routine samples and 4 hours for emergency samples is maintained.
