Overview of the Department
The Department of Anaesthesiology at G.B. Pant Hospital got upgraded into the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Services with the inception of the Surgical ICU during the establishment of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) in 2015. It further expanded as “The Department of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Management” with the starting of the Pain Clinic on 12th March 2024.

Programs Offered
- Approval granted for three Post Graduate MD Anaesthesiology seats from the current academic year.
- Research and training conducted as per the current MBBS CBME curriculum.
Activities
- Regular anaesthesia services are provided for fixed-day sterilization programs conducted across inter-islands.
- Dr. Narayanan Rajaram has completed the Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME), a six-month online course with two contact sessions and a research project.
- Regular departmental academic activities including seminars, journal clubs, and CBME-based teaching sessions are conducted.
- Research projects are facilitated among faculty members and medical learners.
- Regular Basic Life Support (BLS) training is conducted for first responders as part of community outreach.
- The department celebrated World Anaesthesia Day on 16th October 2025 with quiz and poster competitions based on the theme “Anaesthesia in Health Emergencies”.

- Dr. Narayanan Rajaram serves as a reviewer in National and International Journals including Indian Journal of Anaesthesia (IJA), CUREUS Journal of Medical Sciences, Journal of Pharmaceutical Research International, International Journal of Medical Sciences & Current Research, and International Journal of Biochemistry Research & Review.
Research Activities
Dr. Narayanan Rajaram conducted a research study titled “Impact of Reinforcement Basic Life Support Training on the Knowledge, Attitude and Skill Components among the 2024 Batch First Year Medical Learners.”
Services
- A Pain Clinic was initiated on 12th March 2024, and regular Pain OPDs have been conducted since then.
- The department provides anaesthesia services for a wide range of procedures, including neonatal and pediatric minimal access surgeries, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, high-risk obstetrics, geriatrics, and neurosurgical cases.
- On-call critical care services are provided across various units of the hospital, ensuring timely intervention for emergency and intensive care needs.
- The department caters to multiple broad surgical specialties as well as selected super-specialties, including Pediatric Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery.
- A 10-bedded Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is available to provide immediate post-operative care and recovery for surgical patients.
- A 6-bedded Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) equipped with high-end monitors and ventilators delivers advanced post-surgical critical care services.
- As part of Non-Operating Room Anaesthesia (NORA), the department also provides anaesthesia services for Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in the Psychiatry Department.

MD – 3 seats and DNB – 1 seat have been provisionally accepted by Pondicherry University.
Research & Conferences – Dr. Chandra K. Pandey
Dr. Pandey has authored over 125 publications and is the author of the book "Hepatic and Biliary Diseases: Anaesthesiologists' Perspective." He has also contributed chapters to "Percutaneous Dilatational Tracheostomy" and "Handbook of Critical Care."
He has served on the editorial boards of several reputed journals, including:
- Journal of Neurosurgical Anaesthesiology
- International Journal of Ultrasound & Applied Technologies in Perioperative Care
- World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery
Dr. Pandey has supervised M.D. Anaesthesiology and D.M. Organ Transplant Anaesthesiology theses, and played a pivotal role in initiating the first D.M. Organ Transplant Anaesthesiology course in India.
For his contributions to the Indian Journal of Anaesthesia, he has been awarded the prestigious Dr. Bhoj Raj Award (twice) by the Indian Society of Anaesthesia.
